BSA Troop 280 is an all-female scout troop based in Chatham NJ with members from Chatham, Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, South Orange and other local communities.
We aim to build a community of outstanding scouts who have fun, develop as leaders, contribute to their community, learn new skills and enjoy the outdoors.
Founded in 2019, Troop 280 has over 50 active scouts and nine Troop 280 scouts have earned the coveted rank of Eagle. Scouts have opportunities to participate in camping, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, service projects and community service. Scouts also participate in organized events like summer camp, BSA high adventure experiences, and National Scout Jamborees.
We are fortunate to be chartered by Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, located at 300 Shunpike Road in Chatham. The Troop typically meets every Thursday from 7pm to 830pm during the school year. Check our calendar to confirm weekly meeting times, reach out to us at newmembers@scoutsBSA280.org and then come visit us!
Scouting encourages young people to try new things, serve others in their communities, and tackle any challenge they might face in their lives with full hearts and clear minds.

Troop 280 has camp outs every month throughout the school year in addition to opportunities for high adventure. Most camp outs are one or two nights locally but we also have an annual historic trip and a week at summer camp.
We encourage scouts to love the outdoors, follow the principles of Leave No Trace and invest in conservation projects.
Every scout activity is an opportunity to have fun and build friendships.
We see scouts developing lasting friendships across the troop that complement their home, school and community networks of friends.
We are a scout led troop, using the patrol method.
Soon after your scout joins, they will become part of a patrol and have opportunities to participate and lead activities.
At every stage of scouting, we develop leadership skills and encourage scouts to participate in National Youth Leadership Training and to aspire to become Eagle Scouts.
As part of our local community, Troop 280 has invested over a thousand hours in community service helping nonprofits, working on conservation projects and raising awareness for important causes.
When your scout first joins, they will be assigned a scout to be their Troop Guide or Instructor to help them learn basic scouting skills.
We encourage scouts to work on rank advancement to demonstrate and reinforce their outdoor skills and to develop their leadership and citizenship potential.
Troop 280 aims to organize one or more High Adventure trips per year. Recent trips have included:
Philmont, the pinnacle of scouting adventure
New River adventure at Summit Bechtel
The BSA National Jamboree
Scuba diving in the Bahamas and at Sea Base in Florida
